Pilates is a Modern Art Form
A product of the Twentieth Century
And as an Art Form it can be understood in terms of Aesthetics

An excerpt from Austin Harrington’s Introduction to “Essays on Art & Aesthetics” (a Collection of Georg Simmel’s essays)

“By all accounts, this means that a work of art is form, for form is the manner in which elements refer to and join with one another in a unity of some kind. A work of art comes into being when life’s fragmentary contents find meaningful and necessary connections to one another, illuminating a unity and inner harmony in them never supplied by ordinary reality.

Art, and modern art in particular, symbolizes a search of individuals for wholeness and uniqueness of experience in sensuous fulfilment, open always to risks of the strange and unfamiliar as dimensions of greater potential self-knowledge. In tandem and in tension with science, religion, and philosophy, art redeems life from disorderly circumstances and guides individuals in society to higher planes of comprehension of life in freedom and grace”

In my over 20 years of practice, I have come to understand that;

Pilates strives to be more connected to be more correct in its form
Pilates involves understanding parts of a whole that were unknown
Pilates leads to harmony & inner stillness or stability when connection truly happens
Pilates provides emotional reassurance

Joseph Pilates always knew the validity of his work, it is up to us to view it objectively enough to appreciate it. Even while this objectivity comes from intimate understanding after the spending of time.

“The attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure”
Joseph Pilates
